Introduction

The Little Haven hotel claim is the point where Pembrokeshire’s 1977 UFO flap becomes a close-encounter story rather than simply a series of strange lights or distant craft. Rosa Granville, who ran the Haven Fort Hotel near Little Haven, said she saw an oval or saucer-like object close to the hotel in the early hours of 19 April 1977, with heat, coloured light, ground traces and two human-like figures in silver suits. That made her account one of the most dramatic adult reports in the Broad Haven Triangle story. It also made it one of the most disputed. RAF checks found no convincing landing evidence, Ministry of Defence papers show officials suspected a prankster, and later reports of silver-suited jokers complicate the humanoid element. The case remains important not because it proves an alien landing, but because it shows how quickly the Pembrokeshire flap moved from schoolyard sighting to contested folklore, official concern and enduring local argument. Why Little Haven became the close-encounter end of the flap

Little Haven sits close enough to Broad Haven for the two places to be read together, but Rosa Granville’s report had a different character from the schoolchildren’s February 1977 sighting. The Broad Haven Primary case centred on pupils, drawings and a briefly seen craft. The Haven Fort Hotel claim centred on an adult witness, an alleged landing site, humanoid figures and reported traces in the field. That shift mattered: it gave the wider Pembrokeshire flap a more dramatic “something landed here” storyline, while also giving sceptics more specific details to test. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

The hotel itself added to the story’s staying power. Later reporting identifies the former Haven Fort Hotel as a prominent property on the headland between Broad Haven and Little Haven, and Rosa Granville’s daughter Francine later described her mother as a practical, “no-nonsense” person for whom such a claim was out of character. That character evidence does not verify the event, but it helps explain why the account was not simply dismissed by everyone locally as another rumour in a lively UFO season. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

The claim also reached official channels. Granville wrote to her MP, Nicholas Edwards, and later accounts record that Edwards said he was being inundated with representations about UFOs in Pembrokeshire. That is a key reason the Little Haven report matters within the county’s UFO history: it helped push the flap from local press and witness talk into Ministry of Defence correspondence and RAF attention. Rosa Granville’s reported encounter

Granville’s account is usually dated to 19 April 1977. In one widely repeated version, she was disturbed in the early morning by a buzzing noise, first thinking something ordinary might be wrong inside the hotel, before realising the sound appeared to come from outside. Looking out, she reportedly saw an oval object about 100 feet away, with lights, and two figures emerging from it. Francine Granville later said her mother described the figures as reminiscent of men but with unusually long arms and legs, covered heads or helmets, and a frighteningly non-human appearance. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

Other retellings give the object the vivid phrase “upside-down saucer”. Granville was also reported as saying that heat came from it strongly enough to make her face feel burned, and that there was light and “flames of all colours” as the figures came out. Those details are why this is remembered as a close encounter rather than a distant sighting: the reported object was nearby, the witness described physical sensation, and the humanoid figures were part of the same scene rather than a separate rumour. [The Welsh Gift Shop]welshgiftshop.comBroad Haven UFO Sightings - Aliens in West Wales? – The Welsh Gift Shop…

The humanoid descriptions are important but unstable. Some accounts describe the figures as faceless, pointed-headed humanoids; others emphasise silver suits, helmets, boiler-suit-like clothing and long limbs. These variations do not automatically discredit the claim, because reports often change as they are retold through newspapers, documentaries and UFO books. But they do matter when judging the evidence. A report that depends on visual detail becomes weaker when later summaries blur whether witnesses saw creatures, people in protective suits, helmets, blank faces, or something later interpreted as alien. The alleged traces in the field

The physical-trace element is the main reason the Little Haven claim attracted more scrutiny than many UFO stories. Granville was reported as finding burned or affected ground where the object had allegedly been. Some accounts say there were scorch marks; another commonly repeated version says she found “two inches of burned ground”. Francine Granville later said the landing area left a small crater with a ridge around it, and that the feature could still be found decades later, though overgrown. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

Those details sound testable, but the public record is much less firm than the story. Flight Lieutenant Cowan from RAF Brawdy reportedly visited the hotel and examined the site, but found no evidence of a landing. That finding is central. It does not prove Granville invented the story, nor does it explain what she believed she saw, but it does mean the strongest possible version of the case — a UFO leaving obvious, independently confirmed physical marks — is not supported by the RAF check as reported in later accounts. [Herald.Wales]herald.walesthe welsh triangle what was seen in the sky back in 1977The Welsh Triangle: What was seen in the sky back in 1977?12 Apr 2021 — ” The author of the letter adds: “I have not even told the minist…

There is also a more mundane complication: the field was not an empty stage. David Clarke’s account notes that the flattened grass area reportedly overlooked a field containing a Royal Observer Corps bunker. In a county with RAF Brawdy, nearby military activity and local familiarity with aircraft, that setting invites competing interpretations. A strange object and silver-suited figures could be read by believers as a landing; by sceptics as a prank or misidentified human activity; and by more cautious readers as an unresolved observation made in an already suggestive landscape. Why the humanoid claims are disputed

The humanoid reports are the most memorable part of the Little Haven story, but also the part most vulnerable to doubt. Ministry of Defence-linked accounts repeatedly point to prank explanations. Cowan reportedly suggested a “local prankster” might be at work, and noted that the described beings resembled the sort of protective suit issued for fire emergencies at oil refineries. Later summaries also report that officials in S4, the MoD section dealing with sightings, wrote that there was local speculation a practical joker might be involved. [Herald.Wales]herald.walesthe welsh triangle what was seen in the sky back in 1977The Welsh Triangle: What was seen in the sky back in 1977?12 Apr 2021 — ” The author of the letter adds: “I have not even told the minist…

The prank theory was strengthened by later claims. In 1996, Glyn Edwards reportedly said he had walked around the area in a silver suit as a joke during the 1977 flap. David Clarke’s account gives a broader version of the rumour: two local Round Table members allegedly borrowed silver-lined asbestos suits used by refinery workers for a fancy-dress event, and one later described an outfit with a built-in helmet that made him look about seven feet tall. That does not automatically explain Granville’s entire report, especially the object, heat and alleged ground effects, but it gives a plausible route by which at least some silver-suited humanoid sightings could have been created or contaminated. [Mystika]mystika.infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-info

There is a counterpoint. RAF Squadron Leader Tim Webb, who oversaw pilot training at RAF Brawdy, reportedly said the “spacemen” suits described in the flap did not match anything used by base personnel. This matters because not all sceptical explanations fit neatly. “Men in military suits” is too easy if the actual reported suits did not match local RAF equipment; “pranksters in refinery suits” is more plausible for some reports, but still has to account for timing, location, witness perception and why several accounts became attached to craft reports as well as figures. [Mystika]mystika.infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-info

What official interest did, and did not, prove

Official interest is often treated as if it validates the UFO claim. It does not. The National Archives’ general guide to UK UFO records explains that the MoD retained public and military sighting reports, often with possible explanations such as planets, aircraft, balloons and satellites; most reports concerned lights rather than definite craft. The existence of a file or an inquiry therefore shows administrative attention, not confirmation of an extraordinary object. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National Archives UFO reportsThe National Archives UFO reports

The Little Haven-related interest is still significant. Later reporting of released papers says the head of S4 asked the RAF Provost and Security Service whether a discreet inquiry was worthwhile, in part because of the number of apparently “level-headed” witnesses and local concern. One quoted memorandum asked whether there was a rational explanation or evidence for a more serious specialist inquiry, while stressing confidentiality. This suggests officials were not simply laughing the matter away behind the scenes, even if their public position was that there was no defence significance. [Mystika]mystika.infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-infoThe Welsh Triangle:: Mystika-info

But the same official trail also weakens the stronger UFO interpretation. The reported RAF site visit did not verify a landing; later official thinking leaned towards practical jokers for at least some Welsh reports; and no surviving public record has produced physical evidence that would turn the Haven Fort Hotel claim into a confirmed event. The best reading is therefore cautious: official interest shows that the Pembrokeshire flap was noisy and socially serious enough to check, not that the Little Haven object was proved real. How Little Haven fits the wider Pembrokeshire pattern

The Little Haven account did not stand alone. It arrived after the Broad Haven school sighting and alongside other 1977 claims of tall silver-suited figures around west Wales. WalesOnline’s later overview notes reports from Ripperston Farm, Milford Haven and other places, including accounts of seven-foot silver beings, scorched vegetation and strange lights. The danger is that a cluster can be read in two opposite ways: believers see corroboration, while sceptics see contagion, imitation, publicity and escalating local folklore. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

This is why the Little Haven hotel claim is best treated as a case-family rather than a single neat incident. Its parts have different evidential strength. Rosa Granville’s identity, location and distress are well embedded in later reporting. The object, figures and heat are witness claims. The ground marks are alleged physical traces, but not independently confirmed in a way that settles the matter. The silver-suited humanoids fit a wider local pattern, but that pattern is itself tangled with prank rumours and media amplification. [Wales Online+2Mystika]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

The case also illustrates a broader folklore shift. David Clarke has argued that modern UFO stories often recast older supernatural motifs in space-age form: where earlier traditions might speak of fairies or spirits, the 1970s language becomes spacecraft and aliens. In Little Haven, that does not mean Granville consciously borrowed folklore. It means the report landed in a cultural moment when a strange figure in a field was likely to be interpreted through UFO imagery, especially after the Broad Haven school story had already drawn attention. A balanced reading of the Little Haven claim

The strongest point in favour of taking the Little Haven report seriously is that it came from an adult hotel owner whose family later stressed that the claim was out of character, and that it was serious enough for her to write to her MP. It also fits a wider local flap in which multiple people reported odd craft, lights and silver-suited figures within a short period. As a piece of Pembrokeshire UFO history, it cannot be dismissed as a footnote. [Wales Online]walesonline.co.ukWales OnlineThe story of the 'flap' year when alien and UFO sightings were reported around Wales - Wales Online…

The strongest point against treating it as a verified landing is the lack of hard confirmation. RAF Brawdy’s reported site visit found no landing evidence. The humanoid descriptions are compatible with protective clothing or prank suits. Later admissions and rumours about silver-suited jokers give sceptics a plausible explanation for at least part of the humanoid wave. And once a local area has become famous for UFO reports, later sightings can be shaped by expectation, retelling and media attention. [The Welsh Gift Shop+2Mystika]welshgiftshop.comThe Welsh Gift ShopBroad Haven UFO Sightings - Aliens in West Wales? – The Welsh Gift Shop…

The fairest conclusion is that Little Haven turned the Pembrokeshire flap into a close-encounter narrative, but not into a proven close encounter. Rosa Granville’s account remains one of the most distinctive stories in the Broad Haven Triangle because it combines a named adult witness, a specific hotel setting, alleged physical traces and humanoid figures. It is also one of the clearest examples of the flap’s evidential risk: the more dramatic the claim becomes, the more it depends on details that later investigation, prank claims and inconsistent retellings make difficult to verify.
